ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN INSTALLING THE LINUX XKERNEL TO BOOT THE SUN 3/50 Elyros SA contact@elyros.com These notes are to be read in conjunction with the document explaining how to setup the linux Xkernel. It can be found at: http://www.sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca/~aa113/README.txt. If not there, then email martin@kaveri.eas.asu.edu and ask for a copy. You will need only that document and these notes here to setup a Sun 3/50, even if you are an amateur as I was before! Some things before starting --------------------------- If you are going to use thin ethernet, use 50Ohm terminators and T junctions. CHECK whether your Sun is jumped to use AUI Ethernet or BNC connector(thin ethernet). The jumpers are 8, onto a red panel , and if you are going to use thin ethernet, push all 8 to ON(up) or if you are connecting it through AUI ethernet, push all 8 down(OFF). Check this; it might save you a lot of problems. If you get a no carrier message when requesting the IP address, then this is your problem. Let the Sun run its self testing. If one led is blinking at the end of the tests, then everything is fine. Else consult the hardware FAQ on what the problem might be. If you linux box has NE2000 network card, it will probably not be compatible with the Sun. I boot mine using an etherexpress card. Use this one if you can, for sure! Read RFC1597 to put the correct addresses to your computer. DO NOT USE ANY NUMBER YOU THINK, e.g. 152.34.78.123. Use numbers preferably starting with 192.168.23.xxx(0make .... ... .. nfs_prot_xdr.c: In function `xdr_nfs_fh': nfs_prot_xdr.c:78: parse error before `int' make: *** [nfs_prot_xdr.o] Error 1 to fix this I deleted the line 78 which contained the int i; (which apparently in that function is not used at all) and rerun make(if you run make clean, and then make you will again meet this error, and you will have to fix it again). Finally, copy the two generated files to the already existing ones, and restart, as noted in the main document. 6. Setup xdm as described in the main document 7. Setup up the font server, not the other(the font server is more reliable and better to use, and easier of course to install) 8. So setup up the font server 9. Do not setup the NFS fonts 10. Test it. If you have done everything correctly as described in the main document and as described in this notes, then everything should be fine.
